The story goes that the Jade Emperor called for a great race across a river. The first twelve animals to cross the river received a place in the Chinese horoscope as a prize. The goat, the donkey as well as the rooster were only able to reach the goal by working together. So they helped each other and impressed the Jade Emperor, so he awarded the goat the eighth place.
