description
In 1741, Saxony's Elector Friedrich August II commissioned the master modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler to design four magnificent element vases, which were to herald a new European porcelain art. Personified in gods, illustrated by living creatures and artefacts, the natural forces of earth, water, air and fire appeared so human and at the same time superhuman, and the aristocracy took pleasure in the role of those who controlled the elements.

The allegory of air is shown with lightness and grace and depictions of the wind. At the center is the goddess Juno with her attribute, the peacock. The handle is formed by a billowing cloth, held at the upper edge by two putti and at the lower end by Zephir, god of the west wind associated with spring. Bird feathers adorn the spout and the foot, on which putti blow cascades of flowers.
