description
The Amazon rain forest covers a large proportion of the north-west of Brazil, also extending into Colombia, Peru and other South American countries, and is home to countless species of flora and fauna. This paradise on earth is, however, now under greater threat than ever before. Adopting the slogan "Make the world a better place", porcelain painter Heike Wuttke has sought inspiration from the captivating fauna native to our planet's green lung. This green-feathered species of parrot inhabits treetops as dense as the rain forest itself. The forest's rich array of shades of green interspersed with clearings drenched in light serves the bird as an ideal means of camouflage. Its whirring wings and odd patches of reflected light were first outlined by pen and then painted out in overglaze colours. With wings outstretched, the bird seems to be taking off from the vase as well as audibly squawking. Unfortunately, however, like many animals in the region, parrots are now greatly at risk from habitat loss and illegal hunting. The meissen manufactory would therefore like to use the present vase, which was created by Sabine Wachs in 1999, to make an artistic plea for the preservation of this unique bird and the world it inhabits.
