description
This is surely a character known to us all, the loquacious baron astride a cannonball who waxes lyrical about his encounters with supernatural beings. His witty, wildly exaggerated escapades have made Baron Munchausen a legendary figure in German literature, embodying the art of storytelling in its purest form. The world of comic hyperbole was likewise artistic terrain for Prof. Heinz Werner (1928-2019), renowned Meissen porcelain painter and co-founder of the Artistic Development Collective. In a career spanning over half a century at Meissen, the artist authored in excess of 100 patterns in the 1960s and 1970s, including such famous examples as The Arabian Nights, Blue Orchid on a Branch and, in 1964, Munchausen. Art is the elixir of my life, Prof. Heinz Werner once confessed. It was this sense of passion that made him one of the greatest porcelain painters of the present age, one whose timeless motifs have never ceased coaxing new ideas from artists at the Manufactory. To mark the 60th anniversary of the pattern, porcelain painter Elke Dannenberg has now mimicked Werner's unmistakeable style in recreating his zany depiction of the fanciful baron and his adventures on a wall plaque. Werner often used vigorous swishes of his brush to produce cheerful snapshots of his stock figures - invariably fleet of foot and mischievously grinning.
