description
At the so-called Moon Festival in August, the whole family gathers over moon cake and a drink made from osmanthus blossoms. In her new work Hare on Moon, Chinese-born MEISSEN artist Zhuoyu Hou recalls a story that her grandfather used to tell on the night of the festival. In this story, the beautiful Change and the young Houyi live on earth. One morning, when ten suns threaten to burn the earth, Houyi shoots nine of them out of the sky. The people make him king and he marries the beautiful Change. When he receives the elixir of eternal life as a gift from the Empress of Heaven, he hides it as he does not want to leave Change behind. However, she finds the elixir, takes it and immediately floats towards heaven. Desperate, she finally settles on the moon so that she can at least be close to her beloved husband from a distance. In her Wall Plate, the artist reproduces some key elements of this story: a hare sits in front of a gilded full moon, surrounded by clouds, which Zhuoyu Hou applied to the black sky background in delicate Limoges painting. The right-hand edge of the plate features Siberian ginseng leaves in platinum and gold and a delicate white osmanthus blossom. Since 2016, Zhuoyu Hou has been using her artistic expertise to bring new and original ideas to the traditional manufactory.
