description
Having the courage to push porcelain to the limit is certainly a factor driving the figures that Maximilian Hagstotz models. He first began testing how far he could take porcelain art with the experimental "Red Lionfish" he created in 2021. The MEISSEN artist has now gone a stage further with these "Common Seadragons", again creatures from the watery depths.

Maximilian Hagstotz adopted the stylistic device of modelling his seadragons in their "natural environment". There are three in all, whose bodies pass over into abstractly modelled rolling waves. The decorative detail harnesses the entire gamut of Meissen's great stock of colours. Clamorously iridescent yet gentle and quietly spoken, the three adorable sea creatures hover above the waves like rainbows.
These splendid ocean dwellers, an endangered species, are endemic to the seagrass meadows off the coast of southern Australia. They propel themselves with the aid of a dorsal fin and small pectoral fins that enable them to virtually float along in defiance of the laws of gravity. The world's oceans and their exotic flora and fauna have been an abidingly popular theme in works of Meissen porcelain over the centuries and one to which many generations of artists have turned for their patterns, painting and sculptural art.
