description
They were top-class exhibitions, the great world fairs at which countries from all over the world presented their showpieces to an international audience in the second half of the 19th century. In the up-and-coming metropolises of London, Paris and Chicago, everything was done to impress the public and outdo the competition. For the presentation of the Meissen porcelain manufactory at these trade fairs, Ernst August Leuteritz created some of the most beautiful and popular showpiece vases in Meissen's model history: the so-called "snake-handled vases" and "baroque-handled vases" based on vessels from Roman antiquity. One of these is this vase, which was created in 1851.
The work of Ernst August Leuteritz (1818-1893) uniquely represents the complexity of 19th century porcelain art. In his almost 40 years as head of the model department at MEISSEN, he revived the Rococo style - and with it the old splendor and wealth of the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory. In an effort to express all stylistic periods of the past in porcelain, he drew on the manufactory's rich treasure trove of forms. Under his aegis, numerous new vase models and new service forms were created, which today are among the MEISSEN classics.
