description
This opulent gorilla figurine made of Böttger stoneware was designed by Meissen artist Maximilian Hagstotz. With impressive attention to detail and a powerful presence, the gorilla is depicted in all its natural strength and grace. The robust Böttger stoneware, which is known for its hardness and matt surface, gives the ape figure an extraordinary feel and durability. The gorilla figure, which radiates power and strength, was painstakingly modeled and cast by hand.
Böttger stoneware is an exceptional material that is closely linked to the history of the Meissen porcelain manufactory. It was discovered in 1708 by Johann Friedrich Böttger, the alchemist and co-founder of the Meissen porcelain manufactory. The fine, deep red to dark brown stoneware is characterized by its high density, extreme hardness and fine surface. Böttger stoneware is regarded as the first European answer to the coveted Chinese porcelain and marked the beginning of a new era in European porcelain art.
