description
Beautiful porcelain art becomes uniquely MEISSEN when marked with the crossed swords. These have been certifying the supreme quality and exclusive craftsmanship of the Meissen porcelain manufactory ever since 1722. What is surely the most familiar and one of the oldest trademarks in the world adorns every single piece made at the manufactory and guarantees its authenticity and superb workmanship. It is generally painted or fired onto the bottom of wares, but has been accorded pride of place in the cover of this pretty porcelain box. Another striking feature is the green ground hand-daubed onto both the box's cover and a border band on its upper rim. Daubing is a method of painting in which a pattern or ground is applied to the porcelain by carefully daubing or dabbing it on with a fine brush. It makes great demands of our porcelain painters' skill and experience, since the paint has to be applied evenly and harmoniously. The lush grass-green combines with a gilt-enhanced trelliswork pattern to give the cover a discreet yet vibrant feel and a highly refined quality. This contrasts with a rather more restrained motif of little butterflies fluttering breezily and spiritedly over the odd blade of grass. The exceedingly delicate brushwork with which the scene is rendered exemplifies the precision and attention to detail so characteristic of hand-painted Meissen wares.
