description
The fascination of the unknown and the search for new trade routes have inspired people to build simple watercraft for thousands of years. However, the great age of European seafaring only began with the Portuguese voyages of discovery to Africa and the Spanish to America in the 15th century. As with this depiction of a nautical chart from 1575, MEISSEN repeatedly returns to the theme of seafaring. Porcelain painter Lidija Schrenk has always been fascinated by old nautical charts and the shape of the vase by Danish porcelain artist Marianne Höst reminded her of a papyrus scroll, so that the shape and decoration virtually came together by themselves. The vase lid symbolizes the ship's bell with a steering wheel, while the anchor and compass are connected to the vase with a ship's rope. The gold brocade painting, in which the 24-carat gold is applied to the bisque surface and appears in a subtle matt finish after firing, is also particularly noteworthy. An extraordinary masterpiece that recalls the great age of seafaring, but also the beginnings of the manufactory itself. After all, it was large merchant ships that first brought the coveted East Asian porcelains to the Saxon court in the 16th century, triggering a veritable euphoria of collecting.
