description
Small childlike cupids, also known as cherubs, though they are actually different in that they have wings, have a long tradition at MEISSEN and simultaneously bear witness to an artistic aesthetic deeply rooted in the art of the Baroque and Rococo in Europe. These angelic little figurines, often portrayed in whimsical or romantic settings, symbolise the joys and light-heartedness of love. Populating the middle of this richly decorated vase, whose moulds are dateable to 1752, are a diminutive cupid couple. Masterfully assembled by hand and as if immersed in some imaginary game, the two dance around the right and left handles of the vase. Their delicate faces radiate joy and innocence, while their dainty wings and fleet-footed movements convey a sense of lightness and freedom. The consummate painted detail delves deep into the MEISSEN annals to render flowers and fruit in the Early Manner drawn from vintage copperplate engravings. MEISSEN's porcelain painters have set out a choice selection of nature's summer delights around the vase: a luscious cantaloupe melon placed harmoniously side by side with onions, a magnificent verte longue panachée pear, juicy blackberries in a luminous deep purple plus an apple and delectable blueberries. Age-old stylistic devices and an incredibly lifelike style of painting combine to create a captivating still life that impressively mirrors the beauty of nature.
