description
King August III wished to give his future wife Maria Josepha of Austria a very special gift. In 1739, he accordingly commissioned the best in his field, MEISSEN's master modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler, to produce the famous Snowball Blossom tableware service. More than 300 years later, Kaendler's masterpiece of modelling art is still captivating collectors and lovers of MEISSEN porcelain and regularly inspiring the manufactory's artists to create new, modern day variations. In Carola Havemann's wall painting, the iconic blossoms - shaped by hand, applied in the form of fine relief-moulding and then consummately painted, exactly as in Kaendler's own age - serve as the hideaway for a robin. The transitions between the summer scene painted in a classic naturalistic style and the applied mouldings are almost indistinguishable. Blossoms rise up from the plain surface of the porcelain in an almost lifelike manner to trigger an agreeable interplay of light and shadow and to harmoniously juxtapose a finely painted romantic portrayal of nature with heads of Snowball Blossom one could seemingly just reach out and grab hold of. It is this perfect symbiosis of sculptural and painterly design that reveals the special magic of MEISSEN's Snowball Blossom over and over again.
