The Original

Tradition and modernity - MEISSEN combines traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design in an unprecedented way. For the new collection “The Original”, the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory draws on the valuable treasure of its over 300-year history to create a unique service for the modern table. The origins of the decor can be traced back to the first half of the 18th century. Around 1730, the first variations of the world-famous blue onion pattern were created on European hard porcelain in the MEISSEN porcelain manufactory. Inspired by motifs on Chinese porcelain and faience, the MEISSEN blue painters developed the iconic cobalt blue MEISSEN blue onion, which became the manufactory's best-known underglaze painting. The decoration was given the name “blue onion” due to the melon, which was unknown in 18th century Europe and was mistaken for an onion and, in combination with the peach, still adorns the plate flag today. Before the decoration known today as the classic blue onion pattern became established, there were several variations at the same time.

  • The rebirth of an icon
The basis for “The Original” is a variant of the blue onion pattern from the years between 1733 and 1735. The crossed swords in the bamboo trunk were added to the original decoration, which clearly distinguishes the MEISSEN original from possible imitators The decoration was implemented on different colors, which also form the basis for the new MEISSEN “Uni plate collection”.
  • Tradition & craftsmanship
With its colorful decorations consisting of celadon, yellow, red, pink, blue and petrol, “The Original” creates a unique dinner service that is second to none. While the classic blue onion pattern has also been realized in green and purple on white porcelain in the past in addition to the iconic cobalt blue, “The Original” captivates with the cobalt blue onion pattern variation on a coloured background. The colors of the dishwasher- and microwave-safe collection were inspired by the manufactory's own color laboratory with its treasure trove of 10,000 well-preserved color formulas. The MEISSEN porcelain manufactory has been working with ground colors for 300 years. The six single-colored plain plates, each with a colored or gold rim.
