“The Original” - The rebirth of an icon
#ChronicIconic
  • Tradition and modernity - MEISSEN combines traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design in an unprecedented way. For the new collection “The Original”, we draw on the valuable treasure of our over 300-year history and create a unique service for the modern table.

The origins of MEISSEN patterns can be traced back to the first half of the 18th century. Around 1730, the first variants of the world-famous blue onion pattern were created on European hard porcelain. Inspired by designs on Chinese porcelain and faience, the MEISSEN blue painters developed the iconic cobalt blue onion pattern, which became the manufactory's best-known underglaze painting. The pattern was given the name “blue onion” due to the melon, which was unknown in 18th century Europe and was mistaken for an onion and, in combination with the peach, still adorns the rim of the plate today. Before the pattern known today as the classic blue onion became established, there were several variations at the same time.

The basis for “The Original” is a variant of the blue onion pattern from the years between 1733 and 1735. The crossed swords in the bamboo stem were added to the original pattern, which clearly distinguishes the MEISSEN original from possible imitators. While the classic blue onion pattern has also been realized in green and purple on white porcelain in the past in addition to the iconic cobalt blue, “The Original” captivates with the cobalt blue onion pattern variation on various coloured backgrounds. These are celadon green, yellow, red, pink, blue and petrol. The colors of the dishwasher- and microwave-safe collection were inspired by the manufactory's own color laboratory with its treasure trove of 10,000 well-protected color formulas. The result is “The Original”, a unique dinner service that is second to none.
‘The Original’ is a modern lifestyle - inspired by over 300 years of manufacturing history
  • The different colors used as the background for “The Original” also form the basis for the new MEISSEN “The Original Uni” collection. This series consists of six single-colored plates, each refined by a colored or gold rim and forms the perfect complement to “The Original” service.

The development of the Uni series, as part of “The Original” collection, also focused on a renaissance of other MEISSEN icons. In meticulous coordination with the colors of existing MEISSEN services, plates were created with a unique combination of bright background colors and an elegant colored or gold rim. The Uni plates are therefore versatile and can be individually combined with numerous MEISSEN collections as desired.

Give the iconic MEISSEN patterns in Mix & Match a new shine with the Uni plates. Whether it's the blue onion pattern, the imperial court dragon, the world-famous Ming dragon, the MEISSEN rose or one of the other countless decors from over 300 years of manufacturing history.
