In deep mourning we say goodbye to a great man and a gifted artist, who enriched the manufactory so much with his wonderful works and inspired collectors all over the world. On December 21, 2022 Peter Strang passed away after a serious illness in the circle of his family.
From 1950 to 1954, he learned the profession of modeller in the manufactory. His extraordinary talent led Strang to the College of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he studied sculpture from 1955 to 1960, graduating as a sculptor. When the artists' group of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1960, he was one of its founding members and later served as the manufactory's artistic director and chief sculptor for many years. He made a decisive contribution to passing on the MEISSEN cultural asset from generation to generation and thus safeguarding it for future generations.
Peter Strang has remained loyal to the manufactory since 1950 and has created unique pieces in the field of porcelain sculpture in his studio until the end. Because even after reaching the "retirement age" he did not think of "retiring". For him, his art was not just any job, - it was a vocation, which he pursued with full passion until his death. Peter Strang became internationally known with his 1992 created figure "The Collector". He was inspired by the actor Armin Müller-Stahl in his role as Baron Kaspar Joachim von Utz. The film is based on the novel of the same name "Utz" by Bruce Chatwin.
"Peter Strang enabled me to enter the world of Meissen porcelain. As his student, he encouraged my talent and awakened in me a passion for porcelain." Jörg Danielczyk
The manufactory and the Porcelain Foundation honor Peter Strang with an exclusive special exhibition at Haus Meissen, which you can visit until the end of March. Immerse yourself once again in the brilliant world of this exceptional talent and marvel at his unique pieces and his self-painted pictures. Because that Peter Strang was also a passionate painter, is much less known. At home in his studio, he created numerous paintings, the source of his inspiration was his home Moritzburg.
We thank Peter Strang for everything he gave us, for his wonderful works, his passion and his dedication and keep him in our memory as a wonderful person. With his incomparable works, a piece of him will always remain with us and he will be unforgotten.
