The journey begins - MEISSEN2Go Making-of #COFFEE2GOWITHSTYLE
The launch of the coffee to go mug from the MEISSEN2Go collection marked the start of a significant development at Europe's oldest porcelain manufactory. Not only was this the invention of upscale table & dining culture for on the go - it was also an important step towards transporting the image of MEISSEN into the modern age and making the entire brand more attractive to a young audience. It was therefore no coincidence that demand was so high in the run-up to the launch that the first stock was completely sold out within a very short time. This meant that further copies had to be produced as quickly as possible.
Since then, numerous stylish moments of enjoyment have been experienced all over the world with the original coffee to go mugs made from the finest Meissen porcelain. No matter where the lucky owners and their precious companion have ended up - the beginning of each of these aesthetic movements can be found in the small manufactory in the Triebischtal valley in the town of Meissen. As the saying goes, every great journey begins with the first small step. In this article, we want to look at the beginnings of the MEISSEN2Go collection.
The first idea to develop a coffee to go mug came to MEISSEN with the creation of the "Nova" collection. The collection created by product designer Zhuoyu Hou is impressive on many levels. For example, elements that were previously seen as indispensable were questioned and rethought - such as the classic plate flag, which is not present on "Nova". Overall, a new design language has been created, with a recurring interplay of clear lines and gentle curves. No element is left to chance here - all the pieces in the series are in a certain geometric relationship to one another and can be combined to form harmonious patterns. Within this spirit, which interprets the social turning point of table culture in gleaming white porcelain, the idea of designing a coffee to go mug grew logically.
"Every Journey starts with the first step“ famous saying
The straight lines and rounded corners, which make the "Nova" collection a design highlight, were intended to transfer the dynamics of modern society into the coffee to go cup, the it-piece of the 21st century. Even the lid is ingeniously designed: With a subtle elevation on the side leading to the opening, it not only offers a more pleasant drinking experience, but also ties in visually with the supporting elements of the "Nova" collection.
It was clear from the outset that the lid should also be made of porcelain. This initially posed a challenge during the production phase. Due to its chemical composition, porcelain tends to exhibit subtle variations and irregularities during the firing process. This unpredictability in the shrinking process made it difficult to fit the parts precisely, especially when a tight connection between the lid and the cup was required. However, we overcame these hurdles by making rapid adjustments to our production processes. As a result, every cup can now be assigned a precisely fitting lid.
One of the first designs that the product designer had in mind for the coffee-to-go mug was the "Monkey & Sloth" motif. A remarkable piece from MEISSEN's history served as a source of inspiration - a vase on which the animals are depicted in blue underglaze. The scene in which the animals hang from the trees evoked associations of exhaustion, tiredness and the urgent need for coffee for product designer Hou. Other iconic designs followed, such as the Blue Onion Pattern in classic blue or the Crossed Swords in gold. To mark the upcoming Year of the Dragon, a variant with the Fortune Dragon designed by Hou was also planned.
