Fairy-tale Figurines
The “Fairytale” collection is Peter Strang’s expressive interpretation of classic Brothers Grimm characters and themes. Strang’s sculptures translate the at times sinister appeal of the traditional tales into cheerful figurines with childlike simplicity, reminiscent of sketches from an artist’s atelier. The use of simple, geometric figurines – beads for hair, cubes and rectangles as torsos, and oblongs for hands – sets the distinctive style of the collection, which finds its inspiration in expressionist painting. Right down to the detailed brushwork that leaves individual strokes discernible, the diligent craftsmanship and almost childlike decorations emphasize the cheerful character of the fairy-tale figurines.

Peter StrangNo matter whether Peter Strang (1936-2022) is delving into grand themes from theater and mythology or the folkloric appeal of fairy tales, it is the irony, humor and complexity of his style that make his creations so distinctive. True to his maxim to push the limits of what is possible, Peter Strang exploited the aesthetic possibilities of porcelain to the full for his creations. First as a modeler and eventually as head sculptor, he has continually raised the bar at MEISSEN with his technical and artistic mastery for capturing the spectrum of human sentiment. For his more than 50 years of work for Europe’s oldest porcelain manufactory, Strang was awarded the Order of Merit of Saxony in 2000 and Germany’s Federal Order of Merit in 2007. On December 21, 2022, Peter Strang passed away surrounded by his family. His works live on.
