description
All patterns are symbols of good omen in Chinese culture. Chinese artist Zhuoyu Hou drew inspiration from MEISSEN's rich selection of indianisch flower patterns when creating her own scheme comprising various shades of purple, gilt highlights and luminescent turquoise green, and then combined these delightful flowers with Chinese cracked ice patterns. Looking at the vase, it seems as if the flowers are bursting forth in spring through cracks in the gilded ice. Another pattern with a distinctive unbroken line that goes by the name of Meander appears at the mouth and base of the vase and represents the eternal flow of time and life. A banana leaf sprawls over the lower meander accompanied by a ruyi collar, a striking device reminiscent of a mushroom or a cloud. It symbolises the fulfilment of wishes and the attainment of happiness and success. Zhuoyu Hou likewise had recourse to the profound, positive symbolism of her Chinese homeland in her choice of an octagonal vase shape. The neck of the vase sits on a body with elegant round shoulders and a foot that tapers downwards. The vase's eight plain faces vary in width, which makes for constantly shifting perceptions of its proportions as a function of the angle from which it is beheld. Viewing the vase from different perspectives is a sensuous delight.
