2024 - The year of the dragon

  • Xīnnián kuàilè! - or "Happy New Year"! According to the Chinese calendar, the New Year also dawned recently, on February 10. In contrast to the Western world, where we follow the Christian year census based on the birth of Jesus Christ, this year census does not exist in the countries where the Chinese calendar has been adopted. Instead, we are now in the Year of the Wood Dragon - a combination that brings with it exciting changes & progress as well as courage & self-confidence. In Chinese tradition, each year is not only assigned one of 12 zodiac signs, but also an element that connects to the zodiac sign. There are five different elements: Water, Fire, Wood, Metal and Earth. A cycle, also known as a cycle of time, lasts 60 years, in which each sign of the zodiac appears once with each of the elements. The coming year is under the sign of the dragon in conjunction with the element of fire.

According to Chinese astrology, Dragon years are often characterized by determination and success, both for those born in the Dragon year and for society as a whole. After a year of prudence and peace with the Rabbit as a sign, the Year of the Wood Dragon brings steady progress and dynamic change based on the virtues of courage and self-confidence - so if you have been hesitating in recent years, now may be the right time to take a chance. May the fire of the dragon ignite our hearts and inspire us to new heights. The conditions for this are extremely promising - at least from an astrological point of view.
"To have dragons one must have change; that is the first principle of dragon lore.“
Loren Eiseley
  • Dragon-born people are considered courageous, passionate and charismatic. They have an unshakeable belief in themselves and are capable of achieving great goals. The dragon occupies a special position in the Chinese zodiac. It is the only mythical animal among the twelve signs and is often revered as a symbol of power and luck.

The artistic interpretation of the Chinese zodiac signs in Maria Walther's collection of the same name gives the majestic animals a lively presence. Each figure describes the legend of the great race that was declared by the Jade Emperor throughout the animal kingdom. The twelve animals that reached the finish line first were to be immortalized in the Chinese horoscope. The mighty dragon was expected to reach the other shore first, but on its way it passed a village that was suffering from a severe drought. So the dragon lingered in the village to let it rain before continuing on its way - eventually finishing fifth. The powerful movement of the dragon is captured by the dynamic lines and lively expression of the porcelain. The dragon, whether in pure white or decorated with fine golden details, appears almost alive, ready to enter the world and leave its legacy.

The variety of artistic representations shows the breadth and depth of the MEISSEN tradition and invites you to find your personal lucky charm for the coming year. May the Year of the Dragon bring success, happiness and prosperity to all.
